How do I know whether my chimney needs repair?
Common signs are white staining or flaking brick, gaps in the mortar joints, cracks in the concrete crown, rust on the cap or flashing, water in the firebox, and pieces of flue tile in the fireplace. Any one of them is worth an inspection.
Can a chimney be repaired in winter?
Some work can. Liner and flashing repairs are less weather dependent. Mortar and concrete need temperatures above freezing to cure properly, so masonry and crown work is usually scheduled for milder days.
What is the difference between repointing and rebuilding?
Repointing replaces the outer layer of mortar while the brick stays in place. A rebuild takes the chimney down to sound masonry and lays it again. Repointing is enough when the brick is solid and the damage is limited to the joints.
Why does my chimney leak only in some storms?
Wind direction matters. Driven rain reaches flashing and brick faces that a calm rain never touches, so a leak that appears only in certain storms usually points to one side of the chimney.
